Yours for the Making

We are a Municipal District of roughly 3,500 hearty souls spread out across 30,187 square kilometres of Municipal and First Nations Reserve lands, four Hamlets, and eight Localities in North Central Alberta. Located roughly three hours north of Edmonton, we happily aren’t “The big city.” We are a rural community valued for our deep connectivity to the earth and our people.

We are the only Indigenous-majority municipality in Alberta. Proudly. Home of Cree (Bigstone Nation) and Métis traditions and ways of life. A community that generates its oil & gas, energy, forestry, and recreational tourism economy from the natural environment, with a wealth of land-based Indigenous experiential offerings and local creator and entrepreneurial resources on the rise.

We are a thriving, family-friendly municipality enabling healthy, culturally-diverse lifestyles made sustainable with housing affordability and high income earning potential.

We are for the caretakers of the land—hunting, fishing, trapping, planting and harvesting with great ceremonial honour, dignity, reverence and purpose to sustain body and spirit, preserve traditional knowledge and practice, and protect their cultural identity.

We are for the weekend warriors in pursuit of ideal campsite getaways and recreational thrill, and the seasonal dwellers on the run from the impersonal, soul-crushing grind of larger urban centres atop bikes, quads, snowmobiles, and expansive lakeside decks overlooking pristine beaches. And we are for the brave and ambitious enough to roll up their sleeves and work to the bone to build a home, a family, and a career here.

We are culturally, spiritually, and economically bound to the land, and yet we are also boundless because of it. All that we will ever need is here; in the rich soil and clear waters…in our communities…and in ourselves.
