Calling Lake
Situated on the eastern shore of Calling Lake, the beautiful community of the same name is known for its tranquility, recreational pleasures, cultural richness, and—with a year-round population of only 415 rugged souls—close-knit neighbourly charm that swells with the annual migration of summer lakeside cottagers.
The Cree name of Calling Lake, “Kito-Sakahekan” is most famous for the sounds of ice cracking that echo for a long distance. Fishing is popular in the summer and winter, as are water activities like swimming, kayaking, and tubing, and photographic opportunities given the area’s stunning landscapes teeming with wildlife. ATV and horse back riding, and cross country ski and snow mobile trails weave in and out of the community’s forested areas, with berry patches fenced off to keep the plants safe from motorized vehicles.
