The Transportation department has working shops in all area 7 hamlets within the Municipality and is responsible for approximately 300 pieces of equipment which have been delegated and distributed throughout the communities we serve.

There is a licensed and heavy equipment station at the Wabasca shop and the department employs 67 full-time employees and a number of temporary seasonal workers.

The main duties of the Transportation Department include:

Road Maintenance

Paved Roads = 52.4 Km

Graveled Roads = 212.6 Km

  • Gravelling
  • Grading
  • Dust Control
  • Snow Plowing/Sanding
  • Grass cutting
  • Paving and Signage
Airport Maintenance for five airstrips: Wabasca, Calling Lake, Peerless Lake, Trout Lake and Chip Lake
  • Grass cutting
  • Lighting Repairs & Replacements
  • Snow Removal and Ice Control
  • The MD maintains 5 airstrips which is the most in Western Canada.
Landfills/Transfer Site Maintenance
  • Landfills are in Wabasca and Red Earth Creek.
  • Transfer sites are in Calling Lake, Sandy Lake, Chip Lake, Trout Lake and Peerless Lake.
  • Commercial and residential garbage is picked up weekly by the MD and contracted services. Garbage is sorted at each site and recorded by the attendants.
  • Refuse from the transfer sites is stored in 40 yard bins which are picked up and transported to the main landfill sites with our Bin Trucks.
Spring Clean Up
  • Hamlet Clean up is scheduled in mid May, one day out of the month staff and volunteers pitch in and clean up the hamlet, a barbeque is held at the end of the day for all volunteers.
  • Our spring clean-up program is very successful, each year in May we advertise to residents to assist in hauling bigger items to the landfills. Release and Waivers must be signed by landowners.
  • All Landfills and transfer sites are open extra hours for the month of May to accommodate residents for spring clean up.

Recycling
  • Recycling bins are set up at all sites and are open to residents.
  • Once the recycle bins are full they are then transported to appropriate recycling plants.
Kennel &
Animal Maintenance:
  • Animal Control stores animals in kennels that are set up at our landfill and transfer sites.
  • Our landfill attendants, with the help of our laborers, maintain the kennels and keep the animals fed while they wait to be transferred or adopted.

Apart from those items listed above, the Transportation department also assists in all M.D Recreation and Community events, setting up port-a-potty’s, garbage bins, picnic tables and tents.


Surplus Sale

The MD transportation department hosts a Surplus Sale of Assets once to twice a year as the MD accumulates items that are no longer useful to its departments. Watch for posters advertising this event. It is open to all community members.
Note: The 2011 Fall Surplus Sale was cancelled due to lack of inventory.  Please watch for flyers for our 2012 Spring Surplus sale in the New Year.
